A New Chair
It's been a long process. I've been working on Vampire since 1998, and writing for it since before then. If you want to get specific, I've been developing Vampire in the form of Dark Ages since even before that.

That's a long time. Six years. A fifth of my life. I revised a world, blew it to hell, and then built a new one using the experience I gained in working on the old one.

Regular readers will remember how nervous I was as the relaunch approached. I couldn't get it out of my mind. Even after putting the first copy sold at the show in the hands of the first dude in line to receive it, I still couldn't shake the feeling that the culmination of everything I had learned and done was occuring in real time right before me.

I had talked about the situation somewhat with friends at GenCon and afterward. Universally, they asked, "What next?" That question lingered with me for a while. I didn't really have an answer for it. I mean, my professional life began and peaked with Vampire. Answering the question might yield a scary answer. It might have made me look beyond my comfortable niche. It might mean moving into something that would challenge me and force me to learn something new.

These aren't bad things, I realized.

I'm done with Vampire. It's time for me to move on. I'll be staying with White Wolf, but it'll be in a much less developmental capacity. In fact, I'll be managing the developers' department. My boss has made a few personal decisions of his own, and vacating his position was one of them, so that's where I'm going.

It's been a fun trip, strange at times, brutal at times, frequently drunk, frequently painful, but always something that I found to be very rewarding in the end. I share that with everyone who's been with me along the way: professional colleagues, the players who buy the game and enjoy it, and friends who aren't part of the game at all.

As my first sort of executive decision, I'm placing Vampire in some very able hands. After that, let's see what I can do with regard to giving some creative guidance to the company on a greater scale than I did before. It's scary. It's a challenge. It forces me out of my comfortable position. It kind of feels like leaving a relationship -- not a bad one, but one that just wasn't any longer where I was.

Good.

Good Luck. Sounds to me like you're doing the right thing.

It makes me sad to see you leaving Vampire, but I hope it allows you to grow as a creative and professional person.

Indeed. I'll still selfishly hope Justin has a teeny hand in that Rome source book he is so fond of advocating though. It's nice to see some passion in a product.

Congrats and good luck.

Will you miss random idiots cursing you as the guy that "Ruined the game" etc...etc....?

I'll miss your distinctive touch on Vampire, but I know it'll be in capable hands. I wish you well in your new position.

Just don't be a stranger, m'kay?

Congratulations!

Maybe this is more of an F-U to dudes who didn't like Vampire, but
I hope you're still able to destroy our hobby, maybe now on a grander scale.

I rarely say anything on this subject, but I personally feel very comfortable with you having more creative control over the rest of white wolf.

I have a good feeling for just about everything you bring to the floor and I think the company needs what you can provide in that capacity anyway.

I'm gonna miss you as Vampire developer, but let add to the congrats for the new job.

Wow, you're moving on, and Born Slippy's the most fitting song for that. Choose life, and all that rot. Here's to wishing you the best in your new position. :)

Congratulations and good luck. I'll be keeping an eye out to see the results of this move; I'm sure it'll be interesting, it's just in what ways that I'm looking forward to seeing. You've never failed to go in pleasantly surprising directions.

So long as your replacement understand that Paths of Enlightenment or the like are anethema to the core concept of the game, I'll be happy.
Thanks for fixing Vampire, and good luck promoting those ideals on the rest of the WoD.
How does this impact Frostholm? I'm still kinda looking forward to that one.

well damn...
an impressive move upwards, you old bastard.

congrats on the job, but yeah I'll likely miss your direct input on Vampire now. Who knows, though, maybe we'll really get a cohesive WoD this time around. From the sounds of it, this is a good thing.

Cheers.

Somehow I think that Vampire will continue to have you touch, where we players least expect it and it will give us a little delight. But now other areas of White Wolf will also have the fun of getting to know you and your dementia that has amused us for the last 6 years.

Thank you.
[info]drl909 on October 22nd, 2004 10:20 am (UTC)
Well, actually, you were one of the best things that happened to the Vampire line, so good luck in future endeavors.
jasondemotte[info]jasondemotte on October 22nd, 2004 10:22 am (UTC)
I had a suspicion that this would be a "farewell" letter before finishing the first sentance. I'm not horribly surprised, as any job could grow stale after 6+ years, even more as you are in a field that demands you be creative constantly.

I hope you still keep up writing, both for gaming books and novels. And hire that McFarland kid to replace you. He's got moxie.
Shadow Guard[info]mrisaka on October 22nd, 2004 10:25 am (UTC)
Damnit. You better make sure they make Rome. And you also better make sure there's some kick-ass fucking version of Fae going on.

Congratulations. Really, how were you going to top yourself after the masterful Requiem?
Internet Heartbreaker[info]stuntcock on October 22nd, 2004 10:32 am (UTC)
Cheers.

You've yet to disappoint and I don't think you'll start anytime soon. Can't wait to see what you've got in store for us.

Wow. I feel like I got into this at the end of an era. It makes me feel like Hef has died and Playboy isn't Playboy any more. My selfish reaction aside, I think it's cool to see people with talent move to something new.

It's weird, for me that is. I came into VtM and the WOD in the year 2000 and I've pretty much only known your Vampire work. I look forward to seeing what someone else can do. And, I can imagine I'll like the man who steps up. You'll be looking over his shoulder after all. :) Good luck.

Wow!

That is…

…I mean…uh…

Wow!

Here I was thinking that I would have quit this hobby long before you went on to greener pastures.

Best of luck to you.

I'd like to thank you for all of the work that you've put into Vampire over the years. I'll miss seeing your work, but I know that you've made what you feel is the right decision. Good luck to you, I look forward to what you'll do with your new position.
Mel Wong[info]chn_breathmint on October 22nd, 2004 12:26 pm (UTC)

Don't really know how to phrase everything else I want to say.

But this moving on thing? It's good.

The best of wishes Mr. Achilli.

I have been following the whole of your work in WW (i even still enjoy Rage a great deal). You did a gret job with Masquerade (the best run of the game, quality-wise) and Raquiem seems very nice, too.

:-)

With regards and a "keep up the good work",

Wow. That's cool, but I'll miss your work on Vampire.

I find it slightly ironic that Vampire has a habit now of changing Developers a few books after changing editions...

Harumph.
The new chair was allegorical.

Oh yeah, congrats on the decision. Change can be wonderful when consentual. Good on ya!
Peter[info]thepoorman on October 22nd, 2004 09:06 pm (UTC)
So I imagine this means you'll have more input on the other gamelines, if you're manager of the development department? If so, cool beans - your run on Vampire and on Requiem produced some of the best RPG material I've ever seen.

J. Edward Tremlett[info]jedwardtremlett on October 22nd, 2004 10:19 pm (UTC)
Wow.

Justin, I'm very happy for you, and very glad that you presided over the creation of Vampire Revised. Even if I didn't always agree with the direction things were going, or might have questioned the need for one book or another, the VtM: Rev ed line has some of the best books for a series - period. I think the shark got jumped hard somewhere between the core book and the Guides, and it continued to resonate with good, solid work.

This position is going to allow you to bring that same kind of magic to the rest of the lines you'll be overseeing, and I think the games can only profit from it. A big chair, yeah, but you've got the cahones to fill it. Go kick some ass.

One question, though:

"As my first sort of executive decision, I'm placing Vampire in some very able hands."

Who's the lucky owner of these hands? (other than you, if you're the boss, of course)

regards

J

Congrats, mate. Keep on bringing us the good lovin'
Karanov[info]karanov on October 23rd, 2004 01:56 pm (UTC)
What can I say? I was introduced to the WoD around the time that the Revised core books where released,so the only Vampire I know is your Vampire. Now, I know you'll ensure that you get a good successor, but... well... Vampire won't be the same without you. Wether that's a good thing remains to be seen.

All my personal ramblings aside, congratulations with your new job!

No flower bullshit in my leveling of praise. Vampire is much better now after you then it was before. Congrats on the new job and maybe now we will see more continuity through out the game lines as it should have been the first time.
(Anonymous) on October 25th, 2004 07:55 pm (UTC)
congratulations

you did a great job with vampire the masquerade in my opinion (though I wasnt pleased that it had to end)

its good to know your getting somewhere for all your work

Im just hoping exalted doesnt get shifted from the old system to this new one
Toran[info]toran on October 26th, 2004 08:13 am (UTC)
I'd been meaning to tell you that I bought the new edition of Vampire when it came out and I was very impressed with the changes you made. I'd seen your comments before on what you didn't like about the old edition and what you wanted the game to be like and I felt like the redux achieved those goals.
Ah well, as long as you're at White Wolf I guess I can still make you my archnemesis if my game gets picked up by someone.
(Anonymous) on October 26th, 2004 10:32 am (UTC)
So just what does your new job entail? Is it just world of darkness or is exalted included?

And are you now the person people have to beg and plead to get another line published?
