Uncomplicated
I’ve been watching the old British Robin of Sherwood series on DVD and it’s got me sort of nostalgic. I remember watching these back in the late 1980s on PBS and fell in love with them. Sure, the production values are a pretty dated, but the patina is part of why I think it's so endearing. I even enjoy the dated soundtrack, which must have been performed on the cheapest synthesizers the band could find. My wife mocks me ruthlessly when I watch them, and she can't make it through a single episode. Watching them brings me back to a time when I had far fewer responsibilities — not that I’m complaining, but there’s a certain sense of bittersweet innocence lost when I watch them.

Some amount of that has carried over into my gaming habits of late, too. I certainly wouldn’t say that I’m one of the new old-schoolers, but getting my hands dirty with the same reckless abandon I had in middle school really scratches an itch for me. No epic storylines, no massive characterization, no commitments is how I’ve been playing recently, and it’s pretty refreshing. There are times when gaming can be a chore, and that’s the last thing I want after a long day at the office building immersive and characterized. Don’t get me wrong, because that scratches another itch that’s maybe less frivolous. Then again, maybe the problem is that I’m too itchy.

So maybe the show didn’t age well, but being able to just enjoy it is a real pleasure, just like being able to put aside the velvet and absinthe of Vampire for a while is a refreshing change of pace. There are other Robin Hoods out there — the new BBC version seemed a bit glossy for my tastes and I’m tentatively looking forward to the new Russell Crowe production — but I have a soft spot for this one and the maybe “unsophisticated” but undeniably fun game philosophy of my early years.

(If you ant to get really nerdy with me about it, I much prefer the Michael Praed episodes to the Jason Connery ones, but I think the opposite might have been true when I was younger.)

Heh
There was a paranoia adventure called Orcbusters (wizards in Alpha Complex) which specifically has a line to the effect of "We remember playing games where there six red dragons in a 10x10 room; we didn't really care why they were there or how they fit into the 10x10 room."). I remember playing one "campaign" where the DM basically had us systematically wipe through each pantheon in the 1st edition Deities & Demigods. Munchkin gaming at its finest, but when you're 12, awesome...

Re: Heh
That actually sounds pretty cool if handled the proper way. And the proper way, of course, is either high drama, or munchkin terror.

That I had a crush the size of... well, very large things on Michael Praed is a deep dark secret of mine. I had hopes the new Robin Hood show would hit the same awesomeness, but no such luck.

I'm not normally into redheads, but Judi Trott's poufy red hair made her a vintage 80s cutie pie.

Not normally into redheads? Did it escape your notice that your wife is a redhead? (From said redhead.)

I prefered the first Robin Hood to the second as well, even if I was only playing Fighting Fantasy gamebooks at the time...

Chad feels the same way. He tries to smooch her at every DragonCon.

As for Tv series, I'm a devoted fan of Friends. But the show is not that old, though. But you know, when I get to watch the first seasons, it looks pretty much behind the time. they are so funny with their 90's clothes and hairstyles:) However there was an epidemic of Rachel's hairstyle back then. Many of my friends fell vitims to that fashion. Me, meanwhile fell victim whopping commercial mortgage rates at that time and wasn't into fashion and style) Talking about old classic movies, I love The Gone with the Wind and old Romeo and Julliet. Trivial, I know... But still, these two remain my favs.

All Clannad, all the time.

On the bright side, the soundtrack to Robin Hood was the only album of theirs that didn't have "Theme From Harry's Game" on it.

I have one of their albums that has it on there four times. That just seems like bad engineering.

i have a few of their albums and don't recall that being on any of them.

Anything after 1983, it's a fifty-fifty chance.

The new old school isn't really for me, either. It's lost somewhere in the world of megadungeons, saves versus death, and poking in the dark with poles, which was never actually how I played D&D.

My gaming's remarkably less serious recently, though. Which has about as much to do with who I can organize for game as with our shared day job.

I like a megadungeon, now. Not just any megadungeon, but a spiffy one. I would also kiss Ptolus on the mouth if I wasn't married.

I seem to recall an episode of that series that had Richard "Riff Raff" O'Brien playing a bald-headed Saxon shaman, before he went on to greatness as the king of thieves in Dungeons and Dragons. And yes to Praed; Connery always seemed too humorless for Robin Hood.

He's Gulnar! A repeat villain. Squished by a golem at the end of season two.
