It All Fit in Four Boxes

Today's my last real day at the office. I'm still here, packing up my stuff. It's sad. I didn't really think I'd get choked up about it, but I sort of am, and I'm a little glad I'm the only one here right now.

I'm glad I'm leaving. I really am. I just don't love making games anymore. I love playing games. I love working with many of the inspired people who make games. I love hanging out with friends and cussing and telling lies and drinking beers. Participating in games can involve all of that. I just don't love the building of it all anymore.

Parting this way, then, is a good thing for me. Now, when I sit down with a game, I can have fun with it. I think it's strange that I'm giving up a certain aspect of games in order to regain another aspect of them.

Eleven years. Eleven years. Here's to them, the good and the bad. Thanks for being with me for the past eleven years, even if you weren't a part of it the whole time, or you were a part of it before I was.

I'm off to write other things now. Things I want to say and stories I want to tell. It'd be great to have you along if you want to listen. I'll let you know what's shaping up soon.

I never knew you worked in games. What company did you work for, what kind of games, what did you do exactly? I know you are moving on from it, but I ask out of genuine curiosity. I'm curious how people get into making games and what a career in it is like.

I'll lift a glass for you at GenCon, my friend. (Probably a glass of Diet Coke, but still...)

I know I've said this before, but it was the opportunity you gave me that opened the door to my career, and I have no idea where I'd be if you hadn't given me that chance. Thank you.

It's been a great ride, and I'm happy to have followed you through some of it. We even got to meet a couple of times, and I'll always keep my copy of Vampire Revised Limited (yes, I know it was mostly Rob's work) that you signed "Ian: Let's pretend this says something clever. -Justin."

I don't know what you'll be doing next, but I know that it can't be anything but good. So I'm definitely going to keep an eye on your journal.

Thanks again for all the kind words and small favors you've done for me over the years, Justin.

Have a good one, brother. Make sure you don't disappear entirely, yeah?

And thanks for all the games, man. I know the seething hate that comes with the process of making games sometimes, and the love of just sitting down to play them. Just remember - the fun you've given others, as they sat down to play the games you built, far outweighs the seeting hate. Believe me. I'm one of those folks who owes you a "Thanks for the fun, man."

Justin, your work got me into roleplaying. You, as much as anyone at White Wolf and more than most, are responsible for my $1500 WoD collection. Thanks for all the great stories over the years, and I really hope you enjoy playing games as much as I do.

Justin, it was one hell of a ride. Thanks for putting together some of the best damn roleplaying product I've ever had the chance to play and purchase.

I can't wait to see what's next from you.

Headless Samantha says hi and good luck.

For what it's worth, I'd say you left the games in your care better for having had your hand at the tiller. The products were better when you left them than when you began work on them.

On Saturday, I just had my last regular day at my job too. It's a quiet, solemn feeling for me, both sweet and bitter.

May the road rise up to meet you.

Cheers.

It was work you did that dug me deeply into the world of Vampire for the past 11 years. For that alone, I would thank you. But for all of the marvelous work you created, influenced, developed, for the drink you bought me in Chicago (and I still owe you a Mandarin Kamakazi), for the wit in your emails and in your online interactions, for the countless, literally countless, hours of enjoyment that you've given me through the reading, playing and running of books you've developed or written, "thanks" doesn't seem to cover it. Your work has changed my life and the lives of many of my friends over many years. Maybe I can summarize it better;

Cheers, mate, and thanks for the memories. Be well, and always remember to keep your gun and pants where you can find them in the dark.

Re: Cheers.

I know exactly how you feel, brother.

I've rarely left a job that didn't make me feel that way...and shit, my high score is maybe 3 years tops. That's nothing compared to 11.

I know you're going to be successful in anything you do, so go with confidence and don't look back. I'll be right there to borrow money as soon as you make your first million.

This is an odd thing, to see the man responsible for practicaly the entirety of my adult roleplaying leave the industry. It really is the end of an era.

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and thanks for all the fish.

I agree with all the well wishes and luck posts. You started working at White Wolf just about the same time the woman I just moved in with got me into roleplaying. They attempted the old standard of teaching D&D, but that sucked so next they pulled out Vampire. Being a "Poor College Kid (TM)" for 8 of those years, I didn't have lots of cash, but most of it went your way. I'm pretty sure you DJ'ed the party in the Succubus Club I attended in '97 for DragonCon. And you awarded me New York by Night for winning your PotBoiler contest just before the book was released. Those are moments I remember about you, not to mention all the posts on Forums and here on LJ that made us laugh, seethe, worry, and maybe sometimes cry. You have touched the lives of people around the world with your books, your wit, and your music. Never lose any of those and your life will always be true and successful. I will definitely be here post-White Wolf to lurk and live somewhat vicariously through your drunken antics and bask in your witty and sometimes scathing commentary. All the best to you and remember:

Shamelessly promote anything you do here, so that we might again be your adoring throng. ;)
